BOM Generator Software for Windows©.

The program was created to fit my specific needs for managing Kicad/eeschema/PCBnew generated BOM and POS files. If you work the way I do and use Kicad you might find it useful. Read the readme file to see if you might find it useful.

The problem: I find it easier to manage component values and manufacturer part numbers using a spread sheet. Like most people I want to keep my part inventory to a minimum. As such I have a spread sheet with all my commonly used parts, their part numbers, manufacturers and 4 suppliers listed for each part where possible. If I do this in eeschema using the component fields, if I then decide to use a different manufacturer for a component, or a component becomes unavailable I have to go through the whole schematic changing all fields for the same component, a real pain. Using the spreadsheet I can change the component in the parts inventory and it's updated in all linked fields. When I'm creating a schematic I now just enter a good description of the part in one field (as well as the value and footprint in the normal fields) including any important criteria such as voltage, current, power, bandwidth etc. I create the BOM with the eeschema BOM generator and paste it into an Excel spread sheet then go through the parts and Paste>Paste Special>Paste Link from the parts inventory spread sheet. From then on I manage changes such as adding removing parts etc. in the spread sheet.

It would be nice if Kicad had an integrated database whereby you could drag drop parts into the eeschema component editor but there's no evidence that one is going to be included any time soon.
The README file has a little more information as to how the program works. Click here to view the readme.

The program is completely free. See the license file in the download for details. DO NOT upload the program or make the program available for public download without express permission from the author Gordon Whittam. Use the contact link to the left if you have any questions.

The download has only been tested on Windows 7 professional but should work with other Windows versions. You can download the zipped program files here. According to Windows the BOM_Generator.exe ver 1.3.0.0 in the zip file should be 584,704 bytes. There's no install program. The downloaded zip file contains the program, the readme file, the license file and some sample component and position files. Normally you would use cut and paste from Excel. The file functions are there just so you can play with the sample files. Simply unzip the files to a folder of your choice and run BOM-Generator.exe. If you install the program under the 'Program Files' folder you may experience problems with Windows UAC. Sorry if this causes you problems but I don't have the time or will to create a 'proper' install program. That's if I could remember how to do it.

I'm sure to get asked where I get the component trays mentioned in the README file so here's a link: http://www.bondline.co.uk/ Look under storage and handling.

I hope you find the program useful.
